A Litany of Thanks

This Thanksgiving, I pause to offer thanks.  Not simply to nod at a holiday, which is so easy for me to do; but to open myself to the Grace of God and live more responsively, more thankfully.  May these thanks empower and enliven a Grace-drenched life:

Praise God from whom all blessings flow, Praise God all creatures here below, Praise God above ye heavenly host, Praise God, and Christ, and Holy Ghost,

Thanks be to God for life, and the promise of that life in abundance,

For the rich and diverse creation which surrounds us, echoing the goodness of God,

For Rebecca’s kindness, companionship, challenge, and love,

For hope that lifts despair to action,

For friendship and community that burst in unexpectedly, shattering loneliness and kindling new vitality,

For educational institutions that evoke and cultivate wonder, inquiry, and a pursuit of truth, goodness, justice, and beauty,

For family that is supportive, encouraging, and loving,

For a future in the vocative tense, full of God’s call to a life of ministry,

For friends who endure distance, changing life arrangements, and new additions,

For old books that awaken fresh ideas,

For communities of faith who nourish and equip the people of God,

For a nation persistent in its struggle to embody the ideals of freedom, equality, and opportunity,

For a rich heritage to discover and imaginatively redeploy,

For a body, however fragile, enlivened with emotion, thought, and spirit to share with the world,

For Grace which lifts us up, propels us, and promises us into tomorrow,

Oh, Praise God from whom all blessings flow, praise God all creatures here below, Praise God above ye heavenly host, Praise Creator, Redeemer, and Holy Ghost, Amen.
